is the unofficial work schedule practiced in China, where employees work from 9:00 a.m. to 9:00 p.m., 6 days a week. A prominent proponent of this practice is Alibaba founder Jack Ma. After years of criticism and a number of accidents involving workers, China’s Ministry of Human Resources and Social Security banned the 996 practice in 2021.

(translated from Chinese as “lying flat”) is a lifestyle movement that emerged spontaneously in China and is prevalent among millennials. The movement is based on the rejection of excessive effort and overwork in the workplace, and the prioritization of personal development and family over career aspirations. The movement arose in opposition to the widespread 996 working hour system in China.
